The Non-Alcoholic Movement: Why Dedicated Search Categories Are Essential

As global beverage consumption changes, the demand for non-alcoholic options has increased, as dedicated non-alcoholic bars and retail shops grow in number. Finding these establishments can be challenging because of limitations in current search engine and app categorization on platforms like Google, Yelp, and OpenTable. This post outlines the need for new, specific category listings that cater to the non-alcoholic industry and consumer.

The Challenge: Inadequate Search Categories for Non-Alcoholic Venues

Currently, businesses specializing in non-alcoholic beverages must select existing categories like "bar," which implies the sale of alcohol, or "cafe" and "coffee shop," which don't accurately reflect their primary focus. General descriptions like "retailer" or "grocery" also fail to provide consumers with the specific information needed to find these unique locations focused on selling adult non-alcoholic drinks like mocktails and de-alcoholized wines or beers.

This lack of precise categorization creates a barrier for consumers seeking non-alcoholic options, particularly for those abstaining from alcohol for various reasons. Being in environments where alcohol is prevalent can be a trigger for individuals in recovery or those who choose a sober lifestyle. Easy identification of non-alcoholic focused establishments is therefore a matter of support and inclusivity.

The Solution: Dedicated Non-Alcoholic Search Categories

To address this growing need, two distinct categories within major search engines and apps are advocated:

  • "Non-Alcoholic Focused Bar/Restaurant": This category would identify on-premise locations where the primary focus is on adult non-alcoholic beverages, mocktails, and other alcohol-free drink options beyond water, juices, iced tea, or soda.
  • "Non-Alcoholic Focused Retail Shop": This category would highlight off-premise venues, such as bottle shops, that specialize in selling a diverse range of adult non-alcoholic beverages for at-home consumption.

Implementing these categories would improve discoverability for both consumers and businesses within the non-alcoholic market, fostering a more inclusive and accessible environment.
